Police have released a 28-year-old Puna man from custody pending further investigation in connection with a Sunday afternoon shooting incident in Mountain View.

Police have released a 28-year-old Puna man from custody pending further investigation in connection with a Sunday afternoon shooting incident in Mountain View.

Officers responded to a North Road home after it was reported a man had been shot. The 24-year-old victim, who lives in the home, was found in the yard with a gunshot wound to his head.

Mahdi Hemmat, who also resides at that address, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder. He was released from custody Monday afternoon, Chong said.

Police Lt. Miles Chong said Tuesday morning the victim remains in critical condition at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

A rifle was recovered at the scene, Chong said.
